Infantry Flag

[Editorial Comment: Lübeck was one of the three most important cities of the Hanseatic League, which also included Hamburg and Bremen.jba]

Used during the Wars of Liberation (1813-1815) by the Hanseatic Legion, the flag of the Lübeck units was a white flag with a ratio of 5:7. In the centre was a red Latin cross patty. Above the horizontal crossbar were golden numbers 18 (hoist) and 13 (fly). Beneath the cross was a golden embowed inscription. "Deutschland oder Tod!" (i.e. Germany or death!). The flag had a golden bordure at three of four edges. A diagonal Lübeck eagle, i.e. double headed with an inescutcheon, was in the upper and lower hoist corner.

Cavalry Pennant

[Hanseatic Legion: Lübeck cavalry] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 9 Jan 2009

The Lübeck Cavalry pennant was a white swallow tail pennant with the ratio of 1:2 with a red Hanseatic cross at the hoist. As there is no typical detail, symbolizing Lübeck, this kind of pennant might have been used by any cavalry unit of the legion. There have also been white over red horizontal bicolour pennants.
